The Center for Statistical Genetics (CSG) at the University of Michigan School of Public Health invites applications for multiple positions emphasizing computationally intensive analysis of petabyte-scale genetic datasets. Applicants with strong backgrounds software development in C/C++/Java are highly welcomed. Applicants with additional background in the following areas are even more welcomed: (1) web application development; (2) software engineering for cloud computing environment.

The CSG is a highly interactive team involved in cutting edge genetics and genomics research, with a focus on understanding how genetic variation contributes to the risk of human diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, psychiatric disorders, and late-onset blindness.  The group develops, distributes, and maintains software tools that are widely used worldwide for the analysis of genetic data. This is an opportunity to work in a challenging and rewarding research area that constantly poses new technical and computational problems.  The group is seeking developers to develop, enhance, and maintain tools for analysis of DNA sequence data and/or interactive tools for sharing genetic study results and engaging with research participants.

  • Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Design, architect, and implement software tools for large genetic data

  • Implement scalable, portable, and standards-compliant code

  • Evaluate code for correctness, efficiency, scalability, style, and integrity

  • Provide intuitive user interfaces and help write clear documentation

  • Ensure tools are robust and friendly in the face of user and input errors

  • Adapt to changing research needs
